Letter: Trump’s assault on voters’ rights is well under way. When we lose our vote, we have lost it all.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Voters line up to cast their ballots at the Salt Lake City Public Library on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024.

The people of this nation who revere “Lady Liberty” as a symbol of democracy and freedom had better prepare to kiss her goodbye. She is a fragile symbol, lately prone to be manipulated and redefined to represent causes that are alien to the constitutional laws of our nation.

The concerted and long-time planned removal by President Trump of “voters’ rights” guaranteed in the Constitution so he can stay in power is happening right now. Even though it is blatantly unlawful, we are allowing this to happen because we no longer have any independent government authority to do anything to stop it.

This action by Trump, along with his chief of staff and supported by an unrecognizable Republican Party, Supreme Court, and DOJ, smacks of a planned tyranny that no believer in our democracy would have ever considered possible.

We are no longer qualified to sing our praises to “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” We are embarrassed because we have sold our self-respect and lost the respect of the rest of the world.

How many decades will it take to make right the damage caused in just one year? When we lose our vote, we have lost it all. Like most other citizens, I have served my country in the military, held public office, voted faithfully, paid my share of taxes, and believed fervently in our Constitution. Has it all come down to this?

Larry Milligan, Salt Lake City
