Letter: Under Trump, the government is poised to lose legitimacy to tell us what to do

(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) Retired Air Force Colonel of 24 years David Anisman holds a sign that reads "Protect the Constitution" as veterans and supporters gather at the Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City for a protest in response to Trump administration policies on Friday, March 14, 2025.

As we watch the Trump administration openly and expressly violate domestic and international laws, at what point do the rest of us chumps get to act the same way?

Why do we have to obey laws when our government openly refuses to? Why do we have to pay taxes when the Trump administration refuses to spend the money as directed by our elected representatives?

Trump is now starting wars without our permission via Congress and even threatening our NATO allies. He is ordering the killing of humans (supposed drug runners on small boats far from our borders) without due process.

What is to stop him from doing that to each of us?

At least half of the country is told they are the enemy and are being retaliated against by their government because of their politics. Trump’s language is shockingly open about this fact. Many Democrat-lead states and cities are now being blatantly targeted for punishment in the dispensation of government funds and programs and being targeted with military force (National Guard, ICE, DHS, etc.).

Pardons are handed out based on politics and payoffs. Many actions of our government, that we fund, are taken haphazardly at the constantly changing ego- and grievance-driven whims of Trump.

At some point, the government will necessarily, by its own openly illegal and arbitrary actions, lose its legitimacy to tell us what to do. Maybe Congress will finally step up and exert its power on behalf of citizens and humans whose rights are being violated blatantly.

Or maybe they do not truly serve us chumps, the law, and the Constitution any longer.
