Letter: America’s now in thrall of the world’s worst ideas. We can do infinitely better.

(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) Former Utah Republican state chair Thomas Wright leads the State Organizing Convention for the Utah Republican Party at Utah Valley University in Orem on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

It’s not only Trump Derangement Syndrome that afflicts me; it’s also the Entire Republican Party Derangement Syndrome as well.

Project 2025 explained: It’s a collation of the world’s worst ideas combined into one big beautiful blow-out bonanza for billionaires including but not limited to:

1. Down with rank democracy. Good old-fashioned theocratic authoritarian dictatorship was good enough 250 years ago; it’s good enough for me.

2. Let’s put a criminal in charge and grant him total authority combined with zero accountability. Loyalty to him is the new merit. We’ll save a ton of money and be freer too by firing accountants, scientists and other civil servants and replacing them with his sycophants.

3. Let’s give heave-ho to our Constitution and make Congress more like the Russian Duma.

4. Tax cuts for the rich will raise all boats. It hasn’t worked in the past 45 years only because we didn’t double, triple and quadruple down on it hard enough.

5. Hey, why fix anything? Let’s just hate down on people we don’t like, including but not limited to immigrants, intellectuals, unbelievers and people who aren’t white, right-wing right-thinking Christians.

6. It’s a waste of money to invest in the welfare of human beings. Social welfare programs, not tax cuts for the rich, are why we have these titanic deficits.

7. Seeing as science has saved our lives, improved our quality of life, and given us every gadget we can dream up, let’s discard science in favor of self-serving guess work.

On the bright side, America can do infinitely better than this. But it’s going to take our work and dedication to do better.
