Letter: Taxpayer money shouldn’t be used by the GOP to challenge Utah’s new district maps

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) People gather at the Utah Capitol prior to a special session on redistricting and the anti-public union bill in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025.

I believe that the voter initiative to look at the redistricting issue was appropriate — so that all voters in the state have a voice.

What I find inappropriate is that our governor and the Republican Party are using Utah money to challenge the new maps.

I feel that it is appropriate for the Republican Party foot the bill for the fight that they are waging to overturn the lawfully enacted redistricting plan.

It is unfair for the Republican-controlled government of Utah and the governor to use the resources of the state of Utah to bankroll the effort to overturn the legislation while Democrats are required to fund the opposition effort by hiring attorneys and expert witnesses to defend the initiative that was voted on and passed by the electorate.
