Letter: This is a ripe opportunity for Democrats to run for office in all counties of Utah

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Voting signs guide people to the Marmalade Branch Library in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025.

What are you doing Democrats of Utah? Because one congressional district has opened up slightly to favor a Democratic win (for now anyway), all viable Democrats have decided to run in that one district?

I am of the opinion that this is the year that a Democrat could win in all four districts due to the destruction our current Republican delegation has wrought on Utah let alone the entire United States.

There is so much to run on in Utah in all counties.

Our current Republican representatives have supported the crackdown on visas, immigration and affordable health care premiums. While peoples of all counties are feeling the pinch of those policies, the rural communities have paid a higher price in terms of worsening and unaffordable health care and food, as well as on the negative impacts on agricultural production.

Affordability issues in housing, food and health care continue to rise in all counties because of our Republican representatives’ support of Trump’s policies with tariffs and his alienation of countries that used to be our friends and allies.

Our Republican delegation’s support of the murdering of people in the Caribbean for shady reasons and the pardoning of drug criminals is beyond the pale.

We have watched with disgust as Trump has denigrated Americans with vulgar messaging, which has fractured American society … and our Republican delegation remains mute. They have supported the destruction of our educational institutions, legal systems and health care systems. They have supported the blatant racism and misogyny coming out of the White House and both congressional chambers.

It is time to advocate for forward-looking policies not for the backward-looking policies where we had a corrupt spoils system and ineffective and damaging tariffs.

We need leaders who will 1) focus on building infrastructure for the future; 2) aggressively address the issues with climate change and build effective, clean and forward looking energy policies; 3) build an education system to effectively educate all Americans; 4) build an affordable health care system that provides health care to all Americans with the use of good scientific research; 5) address the incredible discrepancy of wealth in this very wealthy country; 6) carry a “carrot” around the world and bring back our friends; 7) build an ethical, effective, democratic government; and, in short, 7) make America a great, affordable, happy place to live.

Our entire Republican congressional delegation has failed to do the job to represent and advocate for the people of Utah. They have become stooges for Donald Trump. This is a very ripe opportunity for Democrats to run for office in all counties of Utah.
