Letter: The exodus of certain Republicans highlights certain tendencies in the current GOP

(Haiyun Jiang | The New York Times) House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., left, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., right, before a vote for House speaker on the House floor at the Capitol in Washington, on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025.

Those Republicans who possess a real conscience have retired or are soon retiring from Congress because they lack courage to stand up to President Trump.

Those Republicans who have always wanted to be rich, powerful and famous more than loyal to the Constitution or to the traditional Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan have smothered any sense of morality, ethics, social propriety and respect for law and have collaborated with Trump’s pack of self-interested, cowardly Cabinet members, monochrome shills in the media, and friendly billionaires.

Then there are those ordinary run-of-the-mill Republicans across the country who never paid much attention to civics classes in school. They badly misread the Judeo-Christian scripture, thinking God wants a Christian monopoly in the government. These folks are happy to sluff off all the hard work of self-government and just kick back and watch an imperious, lying despot single-handedly run the country.

Those Republicans with a white-collar criminal mindset feel free to continue and even expand their efforts because they know if they are caught they will soon enough be pardoned of their crimes.
