Letter: Whether it’s about homeless shelters or nuclear power projects, no wonder Utah is the swindle capital of the nation

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) People at a news conference near the site of the proposed homeless campus in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025.

I am so disappointed in our leadership in this state.

We were all told that a central homeless shelter was not going to work to solve the problem of homelessness. We needed to spend millions of dollars to build several — three — units to really solve this issue. We did spend those millions of dollars to do just that. Now we see that it did not work and we actually need a central shelter built out where the mosquitos are so thick that you will need millions of dollars to control just the mosquitos.

We are right back to square one.

Kudos to those that were against that decision to build the three centers. Every large dollar decision this state has made has partnered up with cost overruns, corruption, bad subcontractors’ deals, back room deals and suspension of best practices. I am appalled at how we put up with this. I am so tired of it. I cannot even begin to list all the examples to prove my point.

Can you say the prison problems, such as cost overruns, etc.? No wonder Utah is the swindle capital of the nation. I shudder to see how this new nuclear power program is going to blow up on us. (Pardon the pun.) Follow the money with this new construction at the Point of the Mountain. Let’s see which one of the cronies of the legislators gets rich. And so it goes.

R. Hawke, Lehi
