Letter: What will it take for Republican voters to finally realize they are being duped?

(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) A counterprotestor wears a hat with the slogan "Trump 2028" during a "No Kings" rally at the Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025.

Dictator checklist:

Rob the poor to pay the rich.

Misuse the presidency to personally amass a fortune.

Eliminate the separation of power between the three branches of government; thus, commandeering a take over of the legislative and judicial by the executive.

Attempt to gut Medicaid, reduce the benefits of Medicare and cut back the benefits of the Affordable Care Act; thus, freeing more tax revenue to financially benefit the dictator and his conspiratorial billionaires with freed-up tax revenue.

Weaken beneficial government agencies to be replaced by autocratic dependency.

Take over the independence of the Department of Justice to neutralize political opponents and promote an anti-rule-of-law agenda.

Extort universities, law firms and entertainment companies with dubious government sanctions unless bowing to despotic personal preferences and demands.

Bypass the restrictive 10-year census law to unfairly politically gerrymander voting districts to maintain House of Representative dictatorial control.

Create a massive Nazi-like-Brownshirt law enforcement agency with masks (ICE) to deport innocent and productive immigrants trying only to escape foreign persecution. All the while deceitfully claiming interest in only deporting criminals and other undesirables.

Delay providing a previously steady flow of military assistance to Ukraine in support of fellow-autocrat Vladimir Putin’s war-crime carnage; thus, unnecessarily, so far, extending a massive slaughter of innocent Ukrainian noncombatants.

Lie and exaggerate on a daily basis to mislead and gain support of a gullible following.

Appeal any negative judicial rulings by benefiting from an already orchestrated despotic-leaning Supreme Court majority.

All of this within the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term. What’s it going to take for Republican voters to finally realize they are being duped and threatened with forfeiting their representative form of government as established by the Founding Fathers.
