I was surprised that the reappointment of Maria Garciaz to the University of Utah Board of Trustees was voted down by the Utah Legislature’s Senate Education Confirmation Committee. I was Maria’s supervisor at KUED (now PBS Utah) and retired as the CEO many years later.
Maria was an outstanding employee at her young age. She worked full time as she pursued her undergraduate degree. The article described her profession and educational successes very well.
Actually I am not surprised at the vote and committee members counting how many times she mentioned “equity.”
I wonder how their resumes compare with Maria’s? Did they graduate from school while working full time? Did her post-graduate success intimidate the voting members?
What is wrong with our country and the Legislature focusing on her so-called “equity” statements rather than her work on the University Board of Trustees?
