Letter: U.N. speech postmortem: Trump is “stark, raving mad. Do Americans not see how embarrassing this is?” How about Utah’s leaders?

If you’re not yet convinced Trump is mentally deranged, his recent speech at the United Nations offers unequivocal proof. For almost an hour, Trump lied repeatedly and boasted about his nonexistent accomplishments. He bragged about ending “seven unendable wars in just seven months,” claimed European countries “are going to hell,” denounced the existential threat of climate change as a “green scam,” proclaimed he’s “been right about everything” and on and on, ad nauseam.

Following Trump’s speech, a senior foreign U.N. diplomat stated, “This man is stark, raving mad. Do Americans not see how embarrassing this is?”

A recent poll by AP-NORC showed that the number of Republicans who believe the country is headed in the right direction has fallen sharply from 70% to less than 50%. Overall, only one quarter of Americans say the country is headed in the right direction, down from 40% in June.

The GOP decline in optimism among younger voters and women is shocking. Among Republicans younger than 45, 61% say the country is headed in the wrong direction, up from 31% since June. About three quarters of Republican women believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, up from 27% in June. 56% of Republican men agree the country is headed the wrong way, up from 30% in June.

Despite widespread constituent dissatisfaction, our Utah representatives brazenly ignore the polls. Instead, they support Trump’s dangerous, often illegal, policies that are inflicting sweeping harm and pushing us toward dictatorship.

Apparently, their blind allegiance to a madman is more important than standing strong for the health, well-being, prosperity and opportunities for all Americans, our democracy, the Constitution, the rule of law, separation of powers and the bedrock American principles that make us a great nation.

Speak out now. Vote for integrity and courage in 2026.
