Letter: In what way does Trump “disagree better,” Gov. Cox?

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Gov. Spencer Cox speaks with members of the media during the PBS Utah GovernorÕs Monthly News Conference at the Eccles Broadcast Center in Salt Lake City onThursday, August 21, 2025.

Dear Gov. Cox:

I sincerely applaud your “disagree better” initiative, which states that we can have spirited political disagreements but we can also do so within our constitutional system and with respect. Thank you for your efforts, which are sorely needed. We all must abhor political violence of any kind.

But I am confused as to how you can continue to support President Trump, who acts in stark contrast to your pleas. He refuses to admit he lost in 2020, and pardoned all participants in the violent Jan. 6 riot. He demonizes his opponents and calls them “enemies” and other derogatory names, which inevitably leads to an increase in the threats leveled against those opponents.

President Trump views judges as fair only when he wins. Judges who rule against him are deemed “rogue, radical, leftist lunatics,” even if they were appointed by Republican presidents, or by Trump himself!

Even at Charlie Kirk’s funeral, he said “I hate my opponents and don’t want the best for them.”

I hope I am wrong, but your support of President Trump, who sheds all pretense of civility, however respectful and calm your demeanor and tone, makes me fearful that loyalty to party is more important to you than your own exhortations to us all to “disagree better.”

Ira Rubinfeld, Springdale
