Letter: The Bingham Canyon Copper Mine can serve a particularly useful purpose
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Ore is hauled from Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine on Monday, July 28, 2025. The giant hole in the southwest corner of the Salt Lake Valley is 2.5 miles wide and three-fourths of a mile deep.
Two recent articles in The Salt Lake Tribune exemplified why we keep getting screwed by the 1872 Mining Law — without giving any solutions on how to solve the problems created by the 1872 Mining Law.
We do, however, have a solution to the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine’s huge pit: fill it with garbage.
Or do you think people would be more supportive of using garbage to cover the exposed lakebed of the Great Salt Lake to control dust?
