Letter: My sympathies for all who witnessed Charlie Kirk’s killing

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) People attend a vigil for Charlie Kirk, the conservative commentator and founder of Turning Point USA who was fatally shot at Utah Valley University in Orem on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025, at Memorial Park in Provo, Friday, September 12, 2025.

As a Twin Cities resident, I sadly have been aware of how these mass shootings and assassinations can hit very close to home given the murder of state Rep. Melissa Hortman in June in a Twin Cities suburb and the horrific massacre of an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old who were in mass at their Catholic school in Minneapolis.

The sad truth, I fear, is that people do not understand how horrible such tragedies are until they see them firsthand.

So, even though I disagreed with the politics of Charlie Kirk, my sympathies are with all those spectators at Utah Valley University who had to see and deal with such a deplorable event as the murder of Charlie Kirk. From Minnesota, stay strong.
