Letter: Judge Gibson’s gerrymandering ruling is a win for democracy

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Judge Dianna Gibson holds a hearing on Utah’s congressional maps process, in Salt Lake City on Friday, Aug. 29, 2025. Judge Gibson previously ruled — based on a decision last year by the Utah Supreme Court — that the Legislature had violated voters’ constitutional right to make laws when legislators repealed Proposition 4, the citizen-passed Better Boundaries initiative.

Hooray for Judge Gibson! Hooray for the Better Boundaries organization! And hooray for the people of Utah who want voters to choose their legislators and not legislators choosing their voters!

Judge Gibson’s decision to back the will of the people in advocacy of democracy in Utah is breathtaking and courageous! The Republicans in the state Legislature are crying foul that not allowing politicians to dictate boundaries is disenfranchising voters.

This is so obviously false as to be ridiculous. It is the voters who have decided they want politically independent commissions to determine the boundaries.

So again, hooray for the voters, for Better Boundaries, and for democracy winning in Utah!
