Regarding the U.S. equity stake in Intel or other companies:
Government taking an equity stake in companies such as Intel that get federal grants may make sense in one scenario. As a government of the people, by the people, and for the people the equity should go directly to the people. If an industry is critical to the American people and needs a grant the people should be the direct beneficiaries.
Set up an investment account in the IRS with every American receiving an equal stock share. No politics, no government ownership or vote on the board, just a public investment of equal importance to all Americans, regardless of the individual tax status.
The proceeds, if there are dividends, would apply annually as a credit to the individual’s tax payments or refunds. Taxpayers could “sell” their shares to apply the current stock value to their tax or to buy bonds.
Not a bad idea to let Americans invest in America when the government decides to provide support to a critical industry, as long as we all benefit equally and the leverage of politics is removed.
