Hopefully, Utahns statewide who are thinking they’ll have a hard time with their property tax bill this year are aware of the state’s four decade-old Circuit Breaker program and are getting their applications in by the Sept. 2 deadline.

There’s six different programs available that helped over 44,000 households last year and the qualifying information is on the state’s website at tax.utah.gov/relief/circuitbreaker.

But residents need to connect with their local county property taxing agencies to apply for the programs in their county.

Luckily, residents of Salt Lake County are well-served by Treasurer Sheila Srivastava. Her office mailed out the applications to past participants in January, and if those who needed help in the past didn’t get the forms in, reminder post cards were sent out. What great service!

Back in the last legislative session, Sen. Dan McCay attempted to destroy the portion of this program for low-income seniors and widows and widowers that helped over 9,400 households in the state. His bill was vetoed by the governor and hopefully his new attempts this year will fail as well. But Utahns need to be vigilant and call their legislators.

Jerry Schmidt, Salt Lake City
