Letter: Speaking of bad ideas, here’s one Gov. Cox should ponder

(Isaac Hale | Pool) Gov. Spencer Cox responds to a reporter’s question during the PBS Utah Governor’s Monthly News Conference held at the Eccles Broadcast Center in Salt Lake City on Thursday, July 17, 2025.

In the recent Tribune article about the “No Kings” protest, Gov. Cox, in hindsight, attempts to denigrate the protest organizers for ignoring DPS’s suggestion that volunteer “peacekeepers” was a bad idea. He didn’t mention any alternatives that were presented to the organizers so it is hard to say, prior to the event, that their plan was a bad idea.

But I can tell Gov. Cox what the worst idea is: that the Utah government allows anyone to carry a loaded AR-15 into a peaceful demonstration (or shopping mall, etc.), especially given our country’s penchant for mass killings.
