Letter: From ICE raids to the gutting of USAID, I don’t understand how LDS politicians can stay silent in the face of suffering

(Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Salt Lake LDS Temple and the Utah State Capitol are seen together, Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

My parents and LDS Church leaders taught me about our responsibility to care for the poor and needy. The Book of Mormon leader King Benjamin taught that followers of Jesus, “administer of [their] substance unto him that standeth in need (Mosiah 4:16).” Jesus taught using the story of the Good Samaritan to love and care for all of God’s children. I believe that followers “succor the weak [and] lift up the hands which hang down (D&C 81:5).”

I am angered by our Utah LDS politicians, who enabled the elimination of USAID, which served the world poor; ICE raids on noncriminal immigrants; and the defunding of basic health care research. Did I even go to the same church with these LDS politicians who voted to cut the taxes of the wealthy and fund massive expansion of ICE, while cutting health care and food? People will die and suffer because of their actions.

I was taught the divine nature of the U.S. Constitution and am shocked how fragile it has become. The government is breaking longstanding political norms, rejects truth and is weaponized against its critics. We now live in a semi-authoritarian regime with loyalty the only virtue.

Religion and politics can’t be separated; they are tightly intertwined. Religious beliefs shape our view of the purpose and role of government. I was taught that includes helping the poor and protecting the vulnerable. LDS Church leaders, with their education and world experience, must be aware of the misery and harm caused by today’s government.

I know some of these leaders personally and have had their hands on my head. I was taught that my LDS leaders are watchmen who see around corners and warn us about today’s evil. I don’t understand why they are silent against such harm and suffering.
