Letter: Is America still good?

(Damon Winter | The New York Times) The Statue of Liberty in New York, Oct. 29, 2019.

Often quoted, misquoted and wrongly attributed is the adage that “America is great because America is good ...”

The saying goes on to speculate that when America stops being good, she will cease to be great. It begs the question as to when America would no longer be “good.”

Would it be the point where we elect a president who is also a 34-time-convicted felon and sexual abuser who worships “the almighty dollar” and has no shame for his adultery and sexual transgressions?

Would it be at the point where we demonize immigrants, government workers and civil servants as being nothing more than free-loaders and burdens to tax-paying citizens?

Would we reach that point when we villainize teachers, professors and institutions that endeavor to make people more well-rounded and compassionate by giving them access to art, science and liberal education? Will we still be “good” when we strip health care, welfare programs and social safeguards from our most dependent and vulnerable citizens?

Can we still consider our country “good” when our leaders and politicians care more about their own political futures than they do about standing up to a tyrant and despot who would trample those very ideals that made America great in the first place?
