Letter: Congress is brimming with particular kinds of addicts. There are two ways to deal with that.

(Eric Lee | The New York Times) The U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on June 24, 2025.

Ideas can be as addictive as drugs. Let’s say you are frustrated with a problem and an idea called “T” promises the answer. You try it, it appears to work, and you feel better. When another problem arises, you reach for T again. Soon you are using T instead of your own judgement for every difficult decision. Even when you know T leads to bad outcomes you still use it. You are addicted. When you finally realize the damage being done, withdrawal from T will be painful.

Most of the Congress is addicted to Trump. Some may be able to kick the habit and honestly interact with their constituents again. For the others, retirement is a good option.
