In 1935 Langston Hughes wrote the 18 stanza poem “Let America Be America Again.” I thought the second stanza was particularly appropriate for our Independence Day celebration on the Fourth of July.
Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.
A day to celebrate our freedoms.
Happy Independence Day,
