“No one is free until we are all free.” — Martin Luther King Jr.
In the last year, nine Republican-led states, including Michigan, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, have introduced legislation that would overturn the Obergefell v. Hodges decision that legalized same-sex marriage for every individual in America.
This is significant because Obergefell allowed same-sex couples the opportunity to have all the same benefits as hetero couples. Despite the measures being taken by these states, research shows that the majority of Americans support same-sex marriage.
Here in Utah, because we are also a Republican-led state, we must be diligent in watching what legislation is being passed through the government. It is our civic duty to let our members of Congress know that we do not support any measures taken to undermine marriage equality for everyone. We as Utahns must be on the right side of history during this time.
