Thank you to the Salt Lake Tribune Editorial Board for your voicing what should have been, and needs to be said, from Sen. Mike Lee.
I am a transplanted Minnesotan, an independent voter, a retired Air Force officer and, perhaps most importantly, a man with values who strives to act morally responsible in all that I do. As to the latter I cannot say the same for Sen. Lee.
Just miles from our home we had a horrific and unimaginable tragedy that should transcend all political rhetoric. Two innocent people lost their lives, two others, including our state senator, are hospitalized with nine and eight gunshot wounds. Why? Because it appears a deranged madman wanted to express his demented political views in the worst possible way.
While most people expressed their condolences, your senator expressed his vile views and did not and has not apologized. To you, the good people of Utah, is Sen. Lee representing your state according to your values? Is he acting in a morally responsible way that is reflective of your values, including your faith? Many of you chose Sen. Lee to represent you. You now have a morally responsible decision to make as to whether you want this morally absent individual to continue representing you and your state.
As for us up here in what many call “God’s Country,” we are still reeling, healing and praying for something good to come from our worst possible nightmare.
In closing, we’re not perfect, but we try our best to always do the right thing. I ask that you, the people of a great state, do the right thing as it relates to your senator. You and only you know what that decision is. Good luck.
