Pat Bagley’s cartoon, “No Sense of Decency,” brought back a bad memory.
About 20 years ago, I was riding the airport terminal bus from long-term parking with two guys in their mid-20s to 30s, engaged in an earnest discussion about communism. The younger one seemed to hang on every word his companion spoke. With only the three of us on the bus, it was easy to overhear their conversation.
The young guy asked, “So, Joe McCarthy was a hero?”
The older guy said, and this is a direct quote: “He just didn’t go far enough.”
I couldn’t keep silent: “Joe McCarthy is one of the most despised and disreputable persons ever to be elected senator. The U.S. Senate censured him for making multiple false accusations about communists and homosexuals in the government and the U.S. Army. His accusations led to the suicide of another senator (Wyoming Sen. Lester C. Hunt). I can’t believe you are praising him.”
The older fellow glanced at me dismissively.
Furious, I asked the bus driver to let me off at the nearest stop because I feared I might lose control.
Later, I recognized the older man from his photo in The Tribune. It was Mike Lee.
Mike Lee is an embarrassment to the state of Utah. Please don’t re-elect him.
