Letter: Where is your humanity, Sen. Lee?

(Jose Luis Magana | AP) Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, speaks during the confirmation hearing for former Gov. Doug Burgum, President-elect Donald Trump's choice to lead the the Interior Department as Secretary of the Interior, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025.

I am so disappointed in your comments, Sen. Lee, regarding the tragic violence against Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses. Political violence is not a joke.

Five years ago, Rep. Steve Scalese was shot at a baseball practice. Democrats and Republicans alike prayed for his recovery.

Rep. Gabby Giffords appeared on the House floor during her recovery after being shot at a constituent meet-and-greet. Democrats and Republicans alike gave her a standing ovation for her courage.

When candidate Trump was nearly assassinated, elected Democrats, including President Biden, spoke against political violence.

Now, a tragic event occurs in former vice presidential candidate Tim Walz’s state and you make a disgusting joke. Where is your humanity? Have you lost all semblance of decency?

You need a come-to-Jesus moment. Examine your conscience against your purported moral values. You are contributing to the divisive atmosphere in our country and endangering other public servants of both parties and their family members. Apologize sincerely and publicly.

Make amends to the people of Minnesota. Ask God to cleanse your heart of the hatred guiding your words. Vow to do better. Otherwise, you are not fit to represent me and my good neighbors of the state of Utah.

Shelly Edmonds, Sandy
