Letter: What happened the last time America put tariffs on steel should be a warning
(Kenny Holston | The New York Times) President Donald Trump takes the stage to speak at the U.S. Steel Irvin Works in West Mifflin, Pa., on Friday, May 30, 2025.
The last time we (G.W. Bush) put tariffs on steel, it took the U.S. steel industry 10 years to recover once the tariffs were lifted. It was too expensive and hard to just create new steel mills, so the industry nearly never recovered.
Trump is not benefitting the common Utahn, nor will we see any relief in years to come. What he is doing is irreversible in many ways, at a minimum, and very destructive. Donald Trump’s tariffs need to end now!
