Letter: Witness the Trump-Musk rift and our negligent representatives. No wonder our young people have disengaged from politics.

(Haiyun Jiang | The New York Times) President Donald Trump presents Elon Musk with a gold key during a joint news conference after Musk announced his departure from his role as a special government employee in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, May 30, 2025

Good grief! I expect either Musk or Trump to challenge the other to a meeting on the playground after school to duke it out, with their friends cheering them on.! What have we come to, as a nation, when the supposed leader of the free world is so hurt by criticism that he threatens to cancel government contracts with businesses owned by the critic? I doubt there is a clause in any of those contracts that states disagreeing with the president is grounds for cancellation.

Then there is the matter of the elected members of the House of Representatives neglecting to read the Big Beautiful Bill before voting for it. Of course it’s too big! Only a percentage of it is about the budget. There’s a whole lot of other “stuff” in there, like Section 70302, which would allow all federal employees to escape any accountability for violation of court rules, like contempt of court. Guess who that lets off the hook! I agree with those who are saying “start over with a bill that deals only with budget matters.” Then, if so inclined, those who want to present other issues to be debated in public and not buried in 1,000 plus pages are free to present their own bills.

It is no wonder that our young people have disengaged from politics. They feel disillusioned, hopeless, and betrayed. So do I! Surely somewhere in this great country of ours there are people of integrity, leadership abilities, and common sense who want to preserve our Constitution and our way of life, caring for the “other guy” and uniting, not dividing, us. Please step up!
