Letter: On the anniversary of D-Day, we’ll be in Washington with a clear message: America must keep its promises to veterans.

(Louis Weintraub | AP) Members of an American landing unit help their comrades ashore Utah Beach during the Normandy invasion, June 6, 1944.

As a Utahn and a proud supporter of those who serve, I’ll be in Washington, D.C., this week, participating in the Unite for Veterans rally on the National Mall. We’re gathering on June 6 — D-Day — to send a clear, nonpartisan message: this country must keep its promises to veterans.

I’m not a veteran myself. But I’ve had the honor of working alongside military leaders and frontline advocates who are deeply concerned about efforts to hollow out the Department of Veterans Affairs, eliminate veteran-held federal jobs, and undermine the care systems our service members rely on.

Utah has a strong tradition of military service — and a deep well of civic pride. We believe in honoring commitments. That’s what this rally is about.

Whether you’ve worn the uniform or just believe in showing up for those who have, now is the time to stand together. I hope my neighbors across the Wasatch Front will join me in supporting this cause.
