Letter: Drastic budget cuts for higher education, yet an extra $300M for a sports district? Is this really what Utahns want?

(Ryan Smith via X) Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith posted this rendering of the proposed downtown sports and entertainment district on X on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024.

Our MAGA Legislature and MAGA governor recently approved a $60.5 million dollar budget cut for public higher education. Individual schools were ordered to cut their base budgets by 10%. At the University of Utah, this decrease of $20 million in the budget is about one third of the total cut for higher education in the state.

The lead headline in a recent Tribune reads, “The SLC sports district is getting a late gift from the Legislature: Another $300M.”

Is this really what the voters and taxpayers of Utah want, drastic budget cuts for higher education, yet an extra $300M for a sports district? These two opposing ways of spending, and the curtailment of spending at the same time are completely opposite of reasonable and prudent governance. Add to this our MAGA governor’s excitement for his new initiative called GRIT, fashioned after Trump’s DOGE initiative.

Hopefully Utah voters will be wise enough to vote for changes in leadership in next year’s midterm election.
