Letter: We must protect the investments made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act

(Randi Baird | The New York Times) The Vineyard Wind Farm in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, Sept. 10, 2024. President Donald Trump has suggested he would dismantle the Inflation Reduction Act, which has reshaped America’s energy landscape.

I am writing as a resident of Sandy, calling on Utah’s members of Congress, including Rep. Blake Moore, Rep. Celeste Maloy and Sen. John Curtis — to prioritize our health, climate, and future by protecting investments made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

The IRA is crucial for cleaning up Utah’s air by supporting clean power and reducing pollution from buildings and vehicles. In the past two years, over $400 million was awarded to Utah in environmental grants through the IRA, but federal budget cuts and Trump’s billionaire agenda threaten these investments.

One critical grant I was counting on is the EPA’s Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicle Grant. As a parent of a special needs child who will ride the school bus from age 3 to 22, free electric school buses were a lifeline. My child has been hospitalized three times for pneumonia, and diesel fumes are a significant health risk for her and other children with medical conditions.

Electric school buses have zero tailpipe emissions and provide a healthier, safer ride. These are the kinds of investments Utah families need, and Utah leaders must take action to protect them.
