Letter: Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” would be “the largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in a single law in U.S. history”

(Haiyun Jiang | The New York Times) House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., looks on as President Donald Trump speaks to reporters after meeting with Republican lawmakers at the Capitol in Washington on Tuesday morning, May 20, 2025. Trump joined House Republicans at their weekly meeting at the Capitol as Johnson tries to shore up support for the GOP megabill to deliver the president’s agenda.

Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” passed by House Republicans is a disaster for America! Barring drastic revisions by the Senate (unlikely), it will “be the largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in a single law in U.S. history” (nonpartisan Center for American Progress).

In the past 50 years, tax legislation and loopholes have enabled the top 1% of Americans to take $50 trillion from the bottom 90% while depriving the U.S. Treasury of trillions in tax revenues (time.com).

Examples:

  • Per Americans for Tax Fairness, the top 35 U.S. corporations pay virtually no federal income tax. Example: Amazon, a trillion dollar company, paid zero federal taxes in 2017 and 2018 and received $266 million in rebates.
  • As of 2022, U.S. corporations had stashed $5.9 trillion in overseas accounts to avoid paying federal taxes (Fortune Magazine).
  • Tax breaks for the wealthy by GOP/Bush (2001) and GOP/Trump (2017) added $10 trillion to the national debt (Truthout).
  • The U.S has the greatest wealth disparity among rich nations. About one-third of American adults struggle to meet expenses (USAFacts). Instead of supporting their constituents and reducing the national debt by taxing the wealthy, Trump/Republicans are obsessed with widening the wealth gap while inflicting harm on millions.

Per the CBO, nearly $700 billion in cuts to Medicaid will deny coverage to 7.6 million Americans. SNAP food assistance will be slashed $300 billion placing 42 million vulnerable citizens at risk. The budget bill triggers $490 billion in mandatory cuts to Medicare by 2034. And on and on, ad nauseam.

Many will be forced into poverty. Millions will suffer and some will die from lack of medical care. All to boost the obscene wealth of billionaires.

If you’re outraged, flood your representatives with your vehement objections.
