Letter: I contacted Utah lawmakers about the push to strip credit unions of nonprofit status. One response surprised me.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Rep. Burgess Owens talks about a major Jordan River restoration project in West Jordan on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024.

Recently I received communication from my local credit union stating that there was legislation being proposed to eliminate the nonprofit status of credit unions and force them to pay taxes, which would hurt all credit union users with higher fees.

The email encouraged me to take action by contacting my federal legislators and explaining why this was bad policy. I thought I would take action and see what kind of response I received and if my representatives in Washington were really listening.

I received, of course, no response from Sen. Mike Lee. I suppose he was too busy tweeting all his buddies (Elon and Donald) to take time out to respond to the little people.

From Sen. John Curtis, I received a standard form letter thanking me for sharing my thoughts and wishing me well. As for Rep. Burgess Owens, I was surprised to receive a detailed, thought out response that shared his opposition to this legislation and that he was cosponsoring legislation to help credit unions serve our communities more efficiently.

Maybe there’s hope?
