Letter: The Founders didn’t intend for any one branch of government to operate without oversight

The constitutional balance of power that has sustained our republic for more than two centuries is crumbling — and Congress’s silence is a major reason why. The Trump administration continues to show open contempt for the rule of law: defying court orders, undermining constitutional checks and balances, and concentrating power in the executive branch. These are not minor infractions. They are red flags that should alarm every true conservative and every American who values liberty.

Yet too many in Congress, including some from Utah, are looking the other way. That silence is not neutral — it is complicit. When lawmakers refuse to check unlawful behavior, they don’t just fail at their jobs; they help normalize tyranny.

The Founders didn’t intend for any one branch of government to operate without oversight. They expected leaders to have the courage to stand up not only to their opponents, but to their own party when it crosses dangerous lines. Utahns deserve better than quiet assent to authoritarian drift. We are watching. History will be watching too.
