Letter: The future is up for grabs. We must protect clean energy tax credits to ensure America leads it.

Smart phones. Clothing. Steel. Does anyone really believe the U.S. is going to become the leading manufacturer of any of these goods? Are they going to power our economy forward?

Let’s be honest: Once another country becomes the dominant maker of a product, it’s incredibly difficult — if not impossible — for America to become the world leader again. It’s so much easier to take the lead with a new industry.

We have a shot at leading the global race for clean energy, with innovations like battery storage, solar, and so much more. With the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), America asserted its dominance in the clean energy industry race. The IRA includes powerful tax credits for homeowners and businesses. These incentives didn’t just boost innovation — they have created real, good-paying jobs across the country.

Here in Utah the impact is already being felt, not just in Salt Lake and Utah counties, but in rural counties like Millard, Emery, Iron, Box Elder and elsewhere where stable, good-paying jobs are hard to come by.

If we want to stay in the race — and win it — Congress must keep these credits in place. The future is up for grabs. Let’s make sure America leads it.
