Letter: My shrinking retirement account’s got me feeling all kinds of liberated

(Haiyun Jiang | The New York Times) President Donald Trump Holds up a report from the United States Trade Representative while he delivers remarks and signs tariffs in the Rose Garden of the White House, in Washington, on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

President Trump’s “Liberation Day” lived up to his hype. He liberated me from thousands of dollars in my retirement account.

That’s money I spent years accumulating to take care of myself now that I’m old. But wait, there’s more! It is an economic certainty that Trump’s tariffs are going to raise prices on everything from soup to nuts. The Budget Lab at Yale University estimates the average family will pay $3,800 more per year in household costs. It’s a twofer! Reduce my retirement savings and raise my living costs.

I feel like I’ve been slapped up one side of the head with a cold fish. While the sting is still fresh, I’m bracing for the next slap on the other side.

Trump wants us to wait and see. Give it a chance. If someone dropped me in a pot of boiling water, I wouldn’t want to wait around to get used to it. It’s darn painful right from the get-go.

Thanks, Donald Trump! Can I have some more, please? I’m not tired of winning yet.

Scott Bell, West Jordan
