Letter: On car prices, Trump speaks the truth at last

(Erin Schaff | The New York Times) Vehicles parked at the Port of Baltimore, in Baltimore, on Feb. 22, 2025. President Donald Trump tariffs on foreign cars could bring car factories to the United States but raise prices for consumers.

Trump’s recent utterance that he couldn’t care less if the price of automobiles goes up as a result of his arbitrary tariff policies is the first truthful statement I’ve heard from him in ten years. Then he followed it up with the comment that Americans will buy domestically made vehicles. We know that there are virtually no fully domestically made vehicles because of the overwhelming amount of imported parts. So the prevarication continues.
