As a direct beneficiary of Inflation Reduction Act tax credits available to homeowners to make energy efficiency improvements in the home, I can attest to the need for these credits to continue to be available.
When my HVAC and water heater both reached the end of service life last year, I was facing a significant financial hit. Not only did the tax credits help to alleviate some of that financial stress, they made it more affordable for me to choose systems which were more energy efficient, meaning that my gas and electricity bills are much less than what I was paying before, even during extreme cold and hot seasons.
I know that there are many other Utah homeowners who would also benefit from these tax credits for the same reasons, and they might be especially important in helping them to afford more efficient equipment now that tariffs and economic uncertainty might inflate the prices of that equipment.
While the direct benefit of these tax credits is clear, the indirect benefits — greater energy efficiency, reduced use of fossil fuels, cleaner air — are harder to measure, but we live them every day. We should make it easier for homeowners to make smart financial decisions for home improvement, not harder. I urge our members of Congress to fight to keep these vital tax credits the way they are, and hopefully expand on them in the future.
