Letter: Use your skills, voices and power to speak against the insanity perpetrated in Utah and by the Trump administration

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) People rally at the Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City to protest Donald Trump on Monday, Feb. 17, 2025.

It would be nice if we had the luxury of speaking out against a single action of either our state Legislature or the current federal administration. Rather, we are faced with the need to stop the much broader Republican agenda of Project 2025 — one focused on consolidating power in the hands of a few, while destroying a society governed by constitutions, laws, and efforts to move us toward a more perfect and inclusive union.

Millions of lives, businesses and other institutions have been and will be harmed by their indiscriminate efforts to cripple the legitimate functioning of virtually every government agency. “Anti-DEI” purges are “disappearing” large segments of our society and history. Beyond that, the current administration is endangering our democracy, the Constitution, rule of law, public health, national security, the economy, world order, the planet and truth itself.

In small corners here and there, the free press, courts and ordinary citizens have made a difference. At a town hall for Sen. Curtis (which he attended disguised as a chicken) one slide stated, “Use the Skills You Have.” I call on our elected officials at all levels of society and government to do so. Use your skills, voices, and power to speak against this insanity. Business leaders and others in positions of influence must join them.

I also call on ordinary Utahns to write, call, organize, protest, talk to neighbors and friends, post on social media, help a political party, donate, use your professional skills — whatever it takes. They have come for the immigrants, LGBTQ persons, women, the poor and disabled, seniors, the free press, books, libraries, universities, attorneys who oppose them, our vote, our air, our water, and our protected lands. They will come for you. Push back. United we have power.
