Letter: Don't complain that your hope for more housing will be scuttled due to a lack of workers

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Apartments under construction on North Temple in Salt Lake City on Wednesday September 4, 2024.

The Utah Legislature’s House Bill 214 is meant to advance the Trump goal of deporting as many people as possible from this country. It requires all businesses, including farmers, that employ 15 or more employees to check their legal status with the free E-Verify service.

Lobbyists objected to it because the law would have a “significant impact on the construction industry”. And it would hurt farmers and expose “them to financial risks.”

Just like if you broke it you bought it; if you voted for it you own it. So don’t complain that your plan for more housing will fail for a lack of workers. Or don’t whine because your crops won’t be harvested because no one will work in your fields.

This is the world you wanted. Live with it and enjoy it, only 3 years & 11 months to go.
