Letter: The nomination of Matt Gaetz for U.S. attorney general presents a great test for Sen. Lee’s integrity

(Evan Vucci | AP) Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump talks during a roundtable with faith leaders as Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, listens Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024, in Prescott Valley. Ariz.

While it would have been an interesting way to get Mike Lee out of an office he swore he wouldn’t run for for a third time, I’m glad that Lee was not the nominee for the U.S. attorney general — what an insult that would have been for our nation.

But unsurprisingly, the president-elect, convicted felon Donald Trump, found someone even worse in his long list of unqualified stooges for vital national posts: Matt Gaetz, who has been under investigation for his proclivity to frolic with underagers, drug use, and improperly accepting “gifts” — an even bigger insult.

I believe this presents a great test for Sen. Lee’s integrity: will he oppose this nomination for the good of our nation, or will he continue to support the conman who has obviously played Lee for a fool.
