Letter: We Democrats are trying to prove that Marx was wrong, but the Republicans give credence to Marx’s view

The other day Donald Trump called Kamala Harris and Democrats generally radical leftists and Marxists, notwithstanding that one of his favorite people is Kim Jung-un. Not just Trump and his followers, but everyone, needs to understand Marxism because it is the central issue of our time.

Marx wanted the majority to rule, too, just as we who believe in democracy do. Marx disliked democratic systems like ours, however, because he said that powerful financial interests commandeer the legislative process and take it away from the majority. He claimed that the proletariat was the majority, and therefore a dictatorship of the proletariat was more democratic than the political systems of Europe and America.

We democrats (small d) would answer that if the proletariat is the majority, the only way to ensure its perpetual control of government is through the principle of one-person-one vote.

Well, look at Utah’s bought-and-paid for Legislature that is disrespecting both the will of the voters and the Utah Supreme Court. If the will of the voter can be disregarded, we citizens can deny the legitimacy of our lawmakers. Maybe we should have a Jan. 6-style riot and throw the bastards out on their asses. Somebody has bought our Legislature. The question is who?

And where is the voice of our governor, Spencer Cox, in all of this? We Democrats (small and capital d) are trying to prove that Marx was wrong, but the Republicans give credence to Marx’s view. (I lived in Spain for seven-and-a-half years, and everybody over there sees what is happening in our country at a glance.)

I have another issue that I would like to bring to downtown voters’ attention. On Election Day in November of 2022, I found the voter drop box on 200 East by the Main Library (directly across from the city and county building) locked when I passed it at 7 a.m. on the way to work. So I took my ballot to University Hospital and mailed it there, hoping that it would post by midnight.

In the Democratic primary election earlier this year, I put my ballot in the drop box by the library on the Saturday prior to election day. Both times I received a letter saying that my ballot was not received in time to be counted. I’m worried about our voter drop boxes.
