Letter: My party — the GOP — should understand why Kamala Harris will become president

When Kamala Harris wins the November election, as she will, and as Donald Trump grapples around for the reason he has, yet again, lost a winnable election and ignores the real facts and throws out all kinds of excuses for his failure, and tries, yet again, to get his base to ignore and, in fact, overthrow the U.S. government, it will be for one reason: The GOP is firmly in the grasp of a personality cult, and they ignore that there are many members of their party — like me — who will not, cannot, and never could vote for that personification of evil to be the president of the United States.

So, by ignoring us, they (the GOP), of their own accord, have guaranteed that we will have to either, as I have for the last three elections, write in the name of a great Republican (even one whom Trump calls a RINO), vote for another candidate on the ballot, or skip the election totally.

For us, “none of the above” should be an option.

Plain and simple.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
