Letter: Classified documents case leaves me feeling betrayed — and not just by the judge who dismissed it

(Kenny Holston | The New York Times) Former President Donald Trump speaks during the first 2024 presidential election debate with President Joe Biden at CNN's headquarters in Atlanta, on Thursday, June 27, 2024.

I’m sure many readers have at one time had access to classified information, as have I. Along with the privilege of that access came the responsibility to handle it according to the regulations: Store information in a secure facility in approved containers.

So, readers, how do you feel when a judge dismisses the case asserting that Donald Trump mishandled classified information by having boxes of it removed from the White House and stored in a Mar-a-Lago bathroom? She dismissed the case in spite of persuasive photographic evidence and statements from Trump employees tasked with handling numerous boxes of clearly marked documents.

I feel angry; so many of us have been so careful to take our national security responsibilities seriously. And I feel betrayed; by the judge, by the judicial system and by Trump, who does not seem to understand that national security secrets are not something to brag about but must be guarded carefully.

I hope the expected appeal reinstitutes this case and justice is served.
