Letter: Is it possible for common sense to bring us together?

(Eric Lee | The New York Times) Supporters of former President Donald Trump frantically try to attract aid for a victim injured in the shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday, July 13, 2024.

Dear Republican friends: Like all of you, I am disgusted by the assassination attempt on former President Trump. This kind of political violence has no place in our society and culture. It is not who we are as Americans.

Having said that, when your party and your party’s leaders spew hate, you can’t be surprised when hate comes back around.

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of the extremists on the left and the right.

Is it possible for common sense to bring us together? Is it possible for us to come together and find the beliefs that brought us together almost 250 years ago?

I can only hope so.
