Letter: Gov. Cox’s words and deeds do indeed embody his call for Utah to “stay weird”

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Gov. Spencer Cox delivers his 2024 State of the State address at the Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024.

We of the great state of Utah have a pretty weird governor who suggests our state should be weird with him.

For example, Gov. Spencer Cox is in charge of “saving” one of the state’s most important natural resources, the Great Salt Lake. His top two solutions are: pray for more precipitation and continue to study the issue.

This from the alfalfa farmer governor, when the solution is right before our eyes. Limit water-guzzling alfalfa farming and exports.

Another example of Cox being weird is he recently signed a letter supporting the Texas governor who is defying a ruling by the Supreme Court. Our governor apparently picks and chooses which laws he wants to disregard.

Among many other examples Cox suggests diversity, equity and inclusion are evil. All I can say to that after more than 40 years in higher education is: Nonsense! Diversity and inclusion have greatly strengthened Utah higher education. It is a shame that Cox would rather show his “creds” in our country-wide “culture wars” than to learn the value of inclusion of all Utahns together regardless of race, gender, credo or religion.

As Gov. Cox wishes, he is certainly weird. Just not in the right ways.
