Letter: Want the NHL and MLB to come to Utah? First, do a better job covering sports.

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah's Brett Stapley shoots as the Utah Grizzlies host the Rapid City Rush, ECHL hockey at the Maverik Center in West Valley City on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024.

Gordon Monson wants the deep pockets to bring an NHL team (and an MLB team) to Salt Lake City? This comes from a man whose employer, The Salt Lake Tribune, fails to recognize that we have an ECHL team playing their hearts out at the Maverik Center — the Utah Grizzlies.

I might believe the support is there if the Grizzlies’ upcoming schedule was ever published in the Sunday Tribune, along with Jazz and the nonprofessional teams. Or, even better, if there was an article published about a game, or even a score? How hard is it to get a final score for a game played in West Valley City, which finished before 10:00 p.m.?

I also subscribe to the Arizona Daily Star, covering Tucson, Arizona. At least twice/week, articles about the AHL Tucson Roadrunners are published.

People want to read about the games (before and after), and the players (including who gets called up to a higher league for a few games).

The Salt Lake Tribune needs to do a better job at covering any hockey or baseball, and certainly better at covering the local professional teams. It’s called building a following. And if Monson wants the NHL and MLB to come to town, he needs to step up and start writing.
