Letter: Utah legislators’ actions suggest they represent Trump rather than their constituents

My wife and I are in our late 70s and very concerned about immigration. The Republican Party announced months ago that there would be no further funding of Ukraine and Israel without an agreement on immigration. A potential agreement on immigration fell apart because Donald Trump inserted his inappropriate opinion into the minds of Republican representatives and senators.

Rep. Celeste Maloy, Burgess Owens, Blake Moore and John Curtis as well as Sen. Mike Lee were elected to represent us, not Trump, and to use their independent minds to do what is best for the country. For over twenty years, Congress has avoided working on immigration. Trump suggested our legislators not do what is right so he could campaign on the issue against President Joe Biden.

A few months ago, the Republican speaker of the House promised to support funding for Ukraine and Israel if a compromise immigration bill is passed. We strongly support U.S. efforts to support Ukraine and Israel. If our Utah legislators blindly follow the would-be dictator Trump, they and other Republicans are deserving of ridicule for their lack of support of democracy.

Maloy, Lee, and others have probably heard plenty from MAGA Republicans. For those of us who support outstanding Republicans like Mitt Romney, it is time to remind Maloy, Lee, Curtis, Owens and Moore who they represent.
