Letter: Utah’s old slogan seems at odds with the actions of the Legislature

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024.

Utah — “a pretty, great state”? Let’s take a look.

Women are denied the ability to have necessary reproductive health care. Children are denied the right for safe, affordable care while their parents are working to provide shelter and food. Children of color and children who identify as LGBTQIA are all treated as less than. The Utah Legislature has passed laws over the past couple of years that treat these individuals as less than, which has encouraged hate speech and bullying of young people to continue without any repercussions.

We have children in this “pretty, great state” that don’t have food on the weekends but our governor can send the Utah National Guard, at taxpayer expense, to the southern border. Wouldn’t these funds be better used helping childhood food insecurity, child care and health care?

I guess my definition of a “pretty, great state” doesn’t match with the all-knowing superior Utah Legislature.
