Letter: The modern philosophy of Trumpism is a u-turn from the pursuits of foundational thinkers

Plato, left, and Aristotle, detail from School of Athens by Raphael

A modern philosophy appears to be emerging in the form of Trumpism, which may be the antithesis to the ancient’s philosophy of Stoicism.

The early philosophers sought “Truth” as they strove to better understand the meaning and purpose of life. Whereas, Trumpism attempts to corrupt and subvert the “Truth” by means of exaggeration, obfuscation, prevarication and delusion.

The early Greco-Roman philosophers encouraged study and reflection as they sought wisdom, knowledge and meaningful discourse. Today’s Trumpists show a disdain for knowledge, science and civil discourse in their pursuit of power and hegemony. Stoics considered honor, trust and integrity to be essential character traits for a virtuous person. They stressed the importance of community and sought to create a civil society based upon fairness, justice, cooperation, harmony, ethical behavior, kindness and compassion.

Trumpism employs boorishness, bullying, fear, anger, rage and hate in an effort to achieve their stated objectives of retribution, retaliation and revenge.

Trumpism’s practices of provocation, intemperance and impulsiveness contrast with Stoicism’s emphasis on dignity, moderation and restraint.

The followers of Stoicism sought to lead a “flourishing life,” filled with equanimity, tranquility and serenity. It remains to be seen where the course of Trumpism will lead us.
