The disingenuousness and machinations of Republicans in power never fail to astound me.
On the one hand they decry omnibus spending bills and want to have “up and down” votes on funding various parts of the federal government. Yet when it comes to providing aid and support to our allies (Ukraine, Israel) they insist on an omnibus bill to tie in minority positions for increased enforcement at our borders — this from a party that is anti-regulatory and anti-enforcement.
The whole country wants immigration reform — changes to our asylum laws, changes to our legal immigration, increased funding for processing and border control — yet Republicans in Congress cannot bring themselves to do the hard work that it will take for comprehensive immigration reform.
It is time for an “up and down” vote to support democracies, and then a commitment to put in the hard work, and then a vote to pass a truly valuable and necessary immigration reform bill.
Get to work, Republicans — photo ops at the border and government shutdowns are the lazy way out, and failure to support world democracies is not what America stands for.
